How Much Weight Can A Roof Top Tent Hold?

May 24, 2024

Rooftop tents can hold a maximum weight of 800–1000 lbs, depending on the manufacturer and other factors. On average, a rooftop tent can hold 900 lbs, and most companies estimate that each occupant can weigh around 200 lbs. For example, the Tuff Stuff Alpha II Hard Top two-person tent and the Tuff Stuff Ranger three-person tent both have a weight capacity of 800 lbs.

A rooftop tent's weight limit refers to two different types of weight:
Dynamic weight
The weight of the tent when the vehicle is moving, which is usually around 150 lbs
Static weight
The weight of the tent when you're sleeping in it, which is usually at least 600–700 lbs

You can find your car's weight limit in the user manual, on the driver's seat door sticker, or on the back of the car. You can also find the weight limit of the roof tent in the specifications section of the roof tent and roof bars product page.

Exceeding the permissible roof load can endanger the car and passengers, road safety, and may lead to legal penalties.
