The things you must know about hard shell tent
May 13, 2024
Although hard shell tents are much newer than soft shell tents, they have been around long enough that a handful of manufacturers have come close to perfecting them.
One attribute that drives most sales of hard shell tents is ease of installation and removal. Many of the better hardshell tents on the market include internal struts with hydraulically assisted deployment. To set up these tents, users simply undo four buckles and the tent pops into place. Once you've attached the ladder to your tent, you're ready to go. Set up a hard-shell tent in just 60 seconds with just one hand. Stowing the tent takes longer but can be done in as little as 2-3 minutes.
Another less obvious advantage of most hard-shell tents is the livable space provided by vertical walls. Most hard shell tents offer four vertical walls, unlike most soft shell tents which have at least two sloped walls. In any living space, vertical walls are always preferred to maximize the available floor space.
On the road at cruising speeds, hardshell tents tend to be more aerodynamic, with their lower profile shapes designed with leading and trailing edges for maximum efficiency. This also reduces wind noise and limits the amount of aerodynamic instability created by such a large roof load.
